Currency Crosses: Educational Breakdown (Simple and Practical Guide)

Currency crosses are forex pairs that do not include the US dollar, such as EUR/GBP, EUR/JPY, and GBP/JPY. Most traders focus on major pairs like EUR/USD or GBP/USD because the US dollar is the world’s main reserve currency and is involved in the majority of global transactions. However, trading cross pairs gives traders additional opportunities, especially when USD pairs are moving sideways or reacting mainly to US news instead of global currency strength.

Another important idea is that cross pairs often show cleaner trends than USD pairs. This happens because USD pairs include the influence of the dollar itself, which can sometimes hide the real strength or weakness between two other currencies. For example, if both the euro and pound are strong against the dollar, EUR/USD and GBP/USD may both rise. But the cross pair EUR/GBP will clearly show which of the two currencies is actually stronger. This makes crosses a useful tool even if you mainly trade major pairs.

Cross pairs are especially helpful when traders see similar signals on two different USD pairs and are unsure which trade to take. Instead of choosing randomly:

  • Check the related cross pair

  • Identify which currency is stronger

  • Select the setup with a higher probability

For example, if both EUR/USD and GBP/USD show buy signals, looking at EUR/GBP helps confirm whether the euro or pound is leading. This improves trade selection and reduces uncertainty.

Cross pairs are also very useful when trading based on fundamental analysis. If one country’s economy looks strong and another looks weak, traders can trade that relationship directly through a cross pair instead of involving the US dollar. This keeps the trade idea simple and focused on the real strength difference between the two currencies.

However, traders should be careful because not all cross pairs behave the same way. A practical approach is the following:

  • Start with commonly traded crosses like EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY, and EUR/GBP

  • Expect higher volatility in some pairs like GBP/JPY

  • Be cautious with less liquid crosses

  • Avoid exotic crosses until gaining more experience

Learning how to read cross pairs helps traders understand currency strength relationships more clearly, improve trade selection, and find opportunities even when major USD pairs are not trending
